Self Care: Explore Beach Therapy

Life is challenging at times, whether you are experiencing a ripple in time, a singular stressful event, or a succession of traumatic events that leave you questioning the purpose and meaning of life. Perhaps these events have caused you to feel frustrated, overwhelmed, nauseous, restless, fatigued, and melancholy. Indeed, it is in these moments that it is sometimes difficult to remember to breathe, be kind to ourselves, and take a moment to pause, reflect, and rejuvenate.

If you have read my blogs, self-care workbook and card set, or watched some of my YouTube videos, you will have observed that one of my favourite self-care activities is to “Get Out Of The House” (strategy 17) and engage in some “Beach Therapy” (strategy 8). This self-care activity is powerful in a number of ways, including the physical movement of walking (strategy 40) on the beach with my two dogs (Bobby and Oscar), which promotes a “meditation and relaxation” (strategy 25) response by “letting go” and being present and mindful in the moment (Foster, 2023)

Now, if you are sceptical, you may say, “Katherine, that is a bit fanciful,” but if you love visiting the beach, you too may notice the beneficial effects it has on your mood and well-being after a visit. In fact, Thakkor, M (2026) notes in their blog article that beach therapy is restorative and provides the opportunity to decompress from psychological and cognitive demands. Thakkor, M (2026) cites White et al., (2020) research study that identifies “blue spaces”, which I call Beach Therapy, promote four key mental health benefits, specifically:

  • Increased movement

  • Decreased cognitive overwhelm

  • Enriching social participation, community connection and networks

  • Enhanced emotional and environmental alignment

So today, I invite you to take a short 4 to 5minute reprieve from your day and explore the beautiful Hams Beach at Lake Macquarie, NSW, Australia with Bobby, Oscar, and me. The day was a glorious winter day: the stunning views, the majestic blue of the ocean and sky contrasting with the white waves and surrounding rocks—a warm 18°C day where the warmth of the sun enveloped you while the cool breeze kicked the stink out of the mind, body, and spirit.

It is my hope that upon watching this short Beach Therapy video, you will be transported by the soft and rhythmic movement of the waves. I hope the presence and antics of my two 10-year-old labs x golden retrievers bring a smile to your face and day, the exploration of the beach and surrounding area grounds you, the warm ambient tones of the background music soothe you, and at the completion of the video, you have had the chance to pause, breathe, and decompress – landing you in a happier and peaceful place.

Enjoy!
